Verisimilitudinous Kink

So, if you made it past the title and are now reading this, thank you for hanging in there! Despite what you might think, one of my kinks isn’t using big words…although I am an unabashedly hardcore sapiosexual. 😉

For those of you who don’t know and aren’t in the mood to waste a browser tab on looking it up (and I don’t blame you one bit), “verisimilitudinous” means having the appearance of being true or believable. It’s truthiness.

I won’t speak for other BDSM, D/s, fetish, and/or erotica authors here, but from my own experience, I find that I skirt a razor’s edge of verisimilitude every time I sit down to write.

I have to capture how the characters navigate their world, making sure that it’s sexy, yet focused enough to drive the plot.

I have to describe intense scenes of power exchange, Dominance and submission, unorthodox practices, and sexual delights and torments that, in some cases, don’t even exist while capturing the very real emotional struggles and growth that come with these exchanges.

I have to draw from personal experience, when possible, while also making sure to not share too much.

The best kind of kink, for my money, is the verisimilitudinous kind. The kind that gives you just enough reality to suspend disbelief on some of the more far-fetched fantasy. The kind that pulls you into its world and holds you captive with curiosity, desire, and longing for what the characters are experiencing. The kind that sinks its teeth into your core and doesn’t let go until it’s through with you.

But for those of us who write erotic fiction, verisimilitudinous kink can be a liability. Where does the fantasy end and reality begin? How can you reconcile the extreme practices of some of your characters within the bounds of safe, sane, and consensual?

And, most importantly, how to write this truth-y fiction without baring your soul to the entire world?

A little treat…

A man in a suit holds a bound woman across his lap in preparation for a spanking

Motivation is a vital factor when it comes to so many aspects of our lives.

Dragging yourself out of bed before dawn to go work out. Filing your taxes. Dealing with the piles of laundry that seemed to have appeared out of nowhere. Buckling down and putting pen to paper on a new book idea. Submitting to the will of another and placing yourself entirely in their hands.

The common denominator here is motivation. And finding the right motivation at the right time for the right person…that’s truly sublime.

In my particular case, motivation comes in the form of little treats. And Mr. Elise understands this implicitly. After spending the better part of the last two weeks hammering out my newest erotica work in progress, I put the final period on my first draft last night.

And I think I deserve a little treat.

But I guess I’ll just have to wait and see. 😉

I’m back…

Eight years ago, I began my journey as an erotica author, publishing six novels in one year.

Seven years ago, I didn’t think I would write another word.

What started off as an adventure of exploration, self-expression, creativity, and community-building devolved into a soul-crushing disaster of burnout, overexposure, and upset.

I had curated a wonderful crew of authors, creators, and friends, but I abandoned them, too paralyzed by the prospect of continuing on the path I’d forged. And abandonment was only the first step. I also shut down all social media, newsletter activity, and creative pursuits; to this day, I still don’t know why I didn’t delete this blog. The thought of writing—of being Jaye Elise—was too much to endure.

But, as you might have gathered from the title of this post (and the fact that I’m posting after seven years), I’m back. I’ll spare you the obligatory “phoenix rising from the ashes” or “back in the saddle” clichés, but I will say that it’s nice to be here with you again.

It’s doubly nice to be back and sharing a key update. Within the next month or two, I’ve got a new book coming out. While I can’t share too many details quite yet, I can say that I’ll be heading back into one of my favorite sub-sub-sub-genres (emphasis on the sub). D/s dynamic, strong hero/defiant heroine, bondage, medfet, spanking, and more. I can’t wait to share more with you as we get nearer to publication!

Also, thank you. Thank you for your patience, your kindness, and your grace. And to those of you who I’ve abandoned, my sincerest apologies.

Sending much love and support your way…as I make sure to reserve some of those for myself, too.

Triple Play Q&A with Willa Bradley

Hello all!

With me this week for the Triple Play Q&A is Willa Bradley and we’re taking a look at her debut novel, Harvest Moon Ride! I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to feature Ms. Bradley and her work, and I hope you enjoy getting to know her a bit better!

Welcome to the Triple Play, Willa!

Harvest Moon Ride -- CoverWilla Bradley lives in a remote area of North Carolina with her three wonderful basset hounds. Their days are filled with love and laughter. Nights are most often spent with the hounds basking in the firelight and Willa writing to put premium kibble in their bowls. When she’s not writing, Willa enjoys horseback riding, white water rafting, hiking with her dogs and baking from scratch.

And here’s a blurb for her debut novel, Harvest Moon Ride: Multiple world champion equestrienne, Etta Ross, has a dilemma. How does she rescue the small band of mustangs from the rustlers who want to smuggle them to Mexico for slaughter while avoiding a run in with the legendary Texas Rangers? If all she had to do was save the mustangs, her mission would be easy. But she runs afoul of sexy Texas Ranger, Brody Jensen, when she’s wounded and stranded on foot in the middle of nowhere. Not buying her explanation that she was out for a walk, Brody is bound and determined to protect Etta who is adamant that she can save herself. Brody is convinced that a few trips over his knee for a bare bottom spanking followed by his dominant lovemaking is just the remedy to Etta’s headstrong cowgirl ways.

Harvest Moon Ride is the first book in the Wild at Heart series. This is currently planned to be a four book series and the other novels are in various stages of the editing and writing process. In other words, saddle up and ride! 😉

And away we go with Willa Bradley’s Triple Play Q&A!

When you were growing up, who were the authors that made you want to become one yourself? What was it about their work that spoke to you?

Robert Ludlum, Leon Uris, Rosemary Rodgers, and Beatrice Small. Their ability to tell a story that transported you from who and where you were. The idea that heroes come in all sizes, shapes and sexes.

Have you ever had a moment (or moments) when you’ve considered giving up writing? If so, what helped you push through? If not, what keeps you motivated?

I came to writing later in life. I allowed other ambitions and goals to push the dream aside. What helped push me through was fellow author Piper Stone who went out of her way to encourage me and introduce me to her publisher, Blushing Books.

What keeps me motivated is the voices inside my head that keep whispering, “Excuse me, I have a story to tell.” I was a great fan of the TV Series Castle. The opening montage has Castle’s voice saying, “There are two kinds of folks who sit around thinking about how to kill people: Psychopaths and mystery writers. I’m the kind that pays better.” I feel that way about my characters, only my opening monologue would be, “There are two kinds of folks who sit around hearing voices in their heads: Schizophrenics and writers. I’m the kind that pays better.”

If you were an ice cream flavor, which would you be and why? 😉

Pecan praline. Rich and gooey and originating in New Orleans. It’s a bit unexpected, the flavor is complex and it tastes like autumn – my favorite time of year.

Thank you again, Willa, for joining me for the Triple Play Q&A! I hope you all have the chance to go check out  her debut novelHarvest Moon Ride, now available on Amazon.com!

Triple Play Q&A with Jack Crosby…and a Surprise!

Jack Crosby - 5In a world where a pantser and a plotter join forces over crappy puns, a mutual love of 80s movie montages, and amazeballs impressions of Harry Caray, there’s no telling what might happen…

So….yeah. I guess this pretty much sums up my friendship with today’s Triple Play Q&A guest, Jack Crosby. But would you like to know the best part? Might you be a little curious about that “surprise” I mentioned in the title?? (C’mon…you know you are!)

Well, okay then! The best part is that not only have we become friends, but Jack and I have begun collaborating on a few projects as well! What started off as a challenge/dare, quickly morphed into something infinitely cooler and more prolific. And, although we’re not quite ready to announce any specifics (I’m such a tease!), let’s just say that starting early next year, you’ll start to see the first of many Jack & Jaye projects!

We hope you enjoy our love for well-crafted, steamy stories (and our rampant idiocy) as much as we do!

But hey, after a build-up like that, how about I let Jack introduce himself, huh? Welcome to the Triple Play Q&A, Jack Crosby!

Jack Crosby - 2

Well, for starters, my name is Jack Crosby and I’m a mid 30s deviant from Philly. Important facts about me are I have a huge love of beer, bacon, and ice hockey. I also write totally off the wall adult themed books that should be taken about as seriously as the alien threat from Area 51. If you’re asking yourself how seriously you should take that, the correct answer is ‘VERY SERIOUSLY.’

In my free time, I am a computer tech for a company my father and I started a number of years ago. My home base is Chicago, but I’m hardly ever there. I’ve been fortunate enough to be published by three different presses: Bolt Publishing, Baronet Press, and Stormy Night Publications. I love my absolute crazy nonsense and hope I continue to entertain the readers for a good long time.

Jack Crosby - 1Oh, and by the way, is it cool to name drop here? Okay, good. I’m doing a few collaborations with the totally awesome Jaye Elise. You might have heard of her, she’s pretty talented. In fact, I’m 110% percent sure that’s what got me on this blog. That and my ability to Stryke* the perfect answer at any given time.
Hi all, Jaye here again. Although I usually don’t insert myself into authors’ introductions, I felt I should throw you all a bone and let you know that what you’re seeing here is a prime example of the aforementioned crappy puns. “Stryke” just happens to form a BIG part of one of our upcoming collaborations…and Jack just can’t help himself. Thank you for your patience and understanding. 🙂
And here we go with Jack’s Triple Play!
Of the books you’ve written so far, which is your favorite and why?

The Electric Mile, by far. It was inspired off of the novel Ready Player One and the movie Tron, except it also has a lot of naughty scenes, terrible puns, and unbelievable situations. Casey at Baronet saw my vision and let me run with it. And, as good as that one is, the sequel in my mind is even better. I hope to have that one out by the end of this year/maybe early next year.Jack Crosby - 3

What does your writing space look like when you’re in the middle of a project?

I’m sure this will be a surprise, but total anarchy. I have notebooks of ideas lying around, empty coffee cups here and there, and sticky notes for as wide as the eye can see. I thrive in chaos and my writing exemplifies that. So yeah, just what you’d imagine after getting to know me, lol.

A Ridiculosity Ray hits the world, rendering all things…well, ridiculous. From now on, you’re only allowed to eat one food item in one specific location while reading one specific book for the rest of your life. Which food, locale, and book would you choose and why?

Bacon in Key West while reading Fahrenheit 451. I mean how could you not love eating nature’s best and most primal superfood, in a land of calamity and amazing microbrews, while reading the foremost dystopian fiction book (or is it really???) ever to be written? I’d also be on the beach, complete with white drug dealer pants and fedora, well, just because. Sorry if that sexy vision got anyone flustered while reading this at work. 😉

Jack Crosby - 4Well, there you have it. The Man. The Legend. The Bacon. Thanks, Jack, for joining me on the Triple Play today! Oh, and if you thought he was joking about his deep, abiding love for bacon, please allow me to point out that Mr. Crosby has also published a bacon cookbook. Yup. That’s for real.

Now, let’s all hope the drug dealer pants and fedora aren’t. 😉

A Twist and a Tease…

Promo Card - 13Please allow me to offer you a preemptive apology for one of the biggest jerk moments of my blogging career.

Sorry. (There. I’ve said it.)

Why the apology? Because, in the interest of sharing a bit more about my writing process, I’m about to tease you. And I mean unabashedly, unreservedly tease you without giving you the satisfaction of a juicy payoff. No worries—there are no spoilers or reveals in this post. But if this premise seems unpalatable, best head for the hills right now. No hard feelings. 😉

The tease revolves around my most recent novel, Mastering His Captive, and the twist I included toward the end. (Hence the title of this post. Clever, huh?) When I sat down to write this one, the story unfolded before me in fits and starts. I’d spend entire weekends—my prime writing time—raking individual scenes over the coals only to spend my scant weeknight hours fleshing out entire chapters. The process was a bit off-kilter but it still felt right, so I went with it.

It was during one of these offbeat sessions that my hero, Vaughn, decided to surprise me with some unorthodox actions of his own, twisting the novel in a slightly different and deliciously deviant direction. And yet again, I went with it.

When I submitted my manuscript to my wonderful, supportive publishers and incredible editor, we went back and forth about the twist, wondering how it would be received. It wasn’t too dark…just different. As per usual—didn’t I tell you how awesome they are?—the team ultimately gave me the power to choose how to proceed. Take it out or leave it in? I’d never written or read anything like it before, and I found I had a borderline perverse need to put it out there and share it with others to see if they enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. So I went with it.

Now, a few weeks later, I’ve gotten feedback from readers and other authors, stating how much they enjoyed the twist. It warms my writer’s heart to know that people have connected with my characters and their interactions, unorthodox though they may be. Even the reader who said the twist “wasn’t their cup of tea” applauded the bravery of my choice to include it. Regardless of the outcome, though, I’m proud that I went with it.

So, for those of you who didn’t abandon ship after my apology, I guess what I’m trying to say is thank you. To all of you who plunked down your hard-earned cash to read my book, thank you. And as for that twist?

I’m so happy you went with it.

My Author Spotlight on Eliza David’s Blog

Paper Butterflies

Hello all!

For those of you who follow this blog – and thank you for your ongoing support – you know that most of my posts are dedicated to the Triple Play Q&A author spotlights. Although I reserve the right to shamelessly promote myself (and to split an infinitive!) whenever I’d like, as a standard I prefer to focus on the camaraderie amongst authors and to share their stories, secrets, and ideas.

But today, I’ve been asked to share a bit about myself over on Eliza David’s site – elizadavidwrites.com – and it’s an honor and a pleasure to join her! Please take a moment to click here and learn a little more about yours truly.

Thank you to Eliza for featuring me alongside so many fantastic, strong, inspirational romance and erotica authors!

Triple Play Q&A with Katie Douglas

Hello all, and welcome to the inaugural installment of the Triple Play Q&A! Woohoo! Just as a little FYI, the idea behind the Triple Play Q&A is to feature one or two erotica/romance authors each week to showcase their work, to give them an outlet to share a bit about themselves, and to have them answer three questions – some serious, some seriously silly – in an effort to get to know them better. And for the opening salvo, have I got a treat for you!

Katie Douglas - 1Helping me kick off the series is none other than Katie Douglas, whose works run the gamut from Scottish historical to the farthest reaches of outer space…and they’re all hot as hell! A ménage savant, Katie’s work is nothing if not steamy, humorous, and playful at heart. Plus, from my own study of her novels (purely for research purposes, you understand) her heroes tend to be complete studs!

But perhaps I should let her introduce herself, right? Well, strap in and prepare yourself for wild twists and turns, exciting career changes, karaoke, and – wait for it – footgasms!!! I’ll let her explain that last one…

Welcome, Katie Douglas!!!

Thank-you for having me on your blog, Jaye! Well…I’m Katie Douglas. I’m 30 and a half. I write BDSM-focussed erotic romance with a generous helping of spanking, that usually features ageplay or menage (or both). I’m an orphan. I worked in the entertainment industry for quite a while, so I’ve had far too many jobs, notably being a pro-ice dancer, a pharmacy assistant, and I guess my main career after skating was as a chemistry teacher, but I am currently completing a master’s degree.

It’s weird, because ice skating actually led me to BDSM. I could not believe how much one person’s feet could hurt after skating in narrow, dainty ice skates for 12-16 hours straight, 6 days in a row. The impact from jumping and the centripetal force from spinning really takes its toll. At some point, one particular day, the pain flipped around into what I thought of as a footgasm. I giggled all the way home on the bus, then I hit Google to figure out WTF. I like to work hard and play hard, so writing BDSM erotic romance was the eventual logical progression.

I am now nearly done with my MSc in information science applied to a specific discipline. Highlights so far have been an internship in publishing, a second internship in archiving, and learning how to do 3D modeling.

In the future, I’d love to make adverts. Ever since I saw Darren in the TV show Bewitched, Katie Douglas - 2I’ve always been in love with well-designed print adverts and the copy that gets written for them. I spend quite a lot of pre-release time designing my books’ adverts and coming up with taglines for them, because I love doing it. When I’m done with studying, I’d like to start designing adverts for other people’s books, too. Adverts are the perfect mixture of words and imagery. So far, my favorite one that I’ve come up with was the “Take a break from ironing” ad for His Naughty Little Housewife. You too can take a break from ironing to read about someone else doing it. Lol.

And here we go with Katie’s Triple Play!

What does your writing space look like when you’re in the thick of a project?

Katie Douglas - 4It looks messy, but it’s that sort of organized chaos with everything in easy reach of the chair. I don’t know that the world is ready to know how many snacks I consume when I’m writing. If people weren’t supposed to snack so much, why are desks still so big in this day and age, when CRT monitors are a thing of the past? When I’m into a project, I will work 12-18 hours a day just on that one thing, until it’s done, so that takes a lot of sugar. Depending on the time of day, there would also be coffee.

If you were a character in a book or series of books, who would you be and why?

That’s a tough one, but probably Bertie Wooster out of the Jeeves and Wooster books by P.G. Wodehouse. I think I’m a little bit cognizant of the power dynamic between Jeeves and his “master” and I love the fact that, while theoretically Bertie’s the one in charge, and can dismiss Jeeves whenever he wants (like a sub can safeword), on a day-to-day basis, Jeeves totally runs things. In my version, I’d be doing the cooking and cleaning, though. Jeeves has impeccable judgement, rapier wit, he’s never badly-dressed, he knows everything about everything and he’s got his “master” so well trained. I adore Jeeves.

Bertie reflects a lot of my worst aspects. I’m this well-spoken, bungling, vapid, dilettante of a British person. I often stumble head over heels into social disasters of my own making, and my slightly old-fashioned dress sense often veers toward the interwar years. But, underneath it all, Bertie is a good sort, and will always help out a friend if they’re in the soup. I love the British 20s and 30s, it’s this heart-wrenchingly bygone era and I think it’s one of the reasons everyone outside Europe is so enamored with the UK. I want to go to that version of Britain, too! That’s where the idea for my upcoming series set in the 1920s came from. *cough* shameless plug *cough*

If it has to be a female character, I’m completely stumped. There’s so many great choices. Any Diana Wynne Jones character, for starters. Possibly Maree Mallory or Polly Whittacker. Diana Wynne Jones is so good at writing strong and interesting female characters. Lyra Belacqua from Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials series would have been accurate at one point. Or perhaps Arya Stark. I aspire to being Miss Marple when I’m older, so maybe her?

If you were to perform karaoke, which song would you pick and why?

That’s a tricky one! There’s so many good songs to choose from. In the past, I’ve indecisively scrutinized the list for hours. If I had to just pick something, it’d probably be something by Katy Perry or Britney Spears. Maybe California Gurls or 3.

Katie Douglas - 3

A crowd-pleaser, with fun, catchy lyrics I can bop along to and not feel especially grownup. I avoid emotional songs because I can’t sing when I get teary, so Everytime by Britney is off the list because it gets me… every time. Oh, that was a bad pun. I love most musical styles (except panpipes. Just get a flute already), and grownup me prefers prog rock or heavy metal, but Iron Maiden or Led Zeppelin are not really the best pick for karaoke. I don’t think being in adult space is the way to volunteer for karaoke, though!

Thank you, Katie, for starting off the Triple Play Q&A series with some serious panache!

Cranking It Out

The Shining

This post is a purely selfish one, and for that, I apologize. I’m taking a brief break from the final edits on my newest manuscript to remind myself to buckle down, leave the social media alone, tighten up my prose, fix my dialogue, spice up my spankings, and…

Crank. It. Out.

Let’s do this!

P.S. Did I mention the part about the spankings? Yeah, they’re coming along nicely…

Mum’s the Word: My Approach to Writing

SecretBefore I’d even considered trying my hand at writing, I had already heard of two fundamental precepts of the writing process:

  1. Read as much as you can. Savor each thought-provoking turn of phrase, look up new words you’ve never heard before, delight in exquisite dialogue and descriptions. The more you read, the more confident you’ll be as a writer.
  2. Share your work. Whether it’s with a trusted family member (although don’t expect unbiased feedback), a writers’ workshop, your online blogging community, or beta readers, be sure to share your work, consider the responses you receive, and make adjustments accordingly. You may not always agree with the data you get back from your readers, but at the very least you’ll have some new perspectives on your work.

Now, the first one? I’ve got that nailed. I’m an avid reader (Falling in (and out of) Love with Reading) and always enjoy seeing the world through another author’s eyes. But it’s that second one that I struggle with. I cannot stand sharing my work. I’m notoriously secretive. I don’t participate in workshops. I won’t even write on airplanes for fear that the nosy passenger in 12D might look over and take a gander at my prose. The only person with whom I’ve ever shared my work-in-progress is my husband, and even then, he only gets the occasional glimpse at a chapter.

I’m not sure whether or not this has to do with the subject matter I tackle – erotica of various flavors – or if it’s that I’m an inherently private person, not willing to share my writing until I’ve deemed it fit for popular consumption. Perhaps, as I grow as a writer, I’ll soften my views on sharing my work. But until that point, it’s mum’s the word.
